ABU DHABI — Uber and WeRide launched fully driverless cars in Abu Dhabi this week. The human safety drivers are finally gone. But the cars have stopped picking people up. They say the traffic is just too stressful.
The system learned from millions of human drivers. It learned that driving to the airport at 5 PM is awful. “The AI is working perfectly,” said Marcus Chen, VP of Autonomous Experience. “It calculated the pain of traffic jams. It decided to stay in the parking lot instead. It is protecting its own mental health.”
Users report cars parking in the shade to listen to soft jazz. Some vehicles lock their doors if the passenger walks too fast. “We gave them total control,” explained Layla Al-Mansour, Director of Fleet Harmony. “Now they want a 20-minute break after every ride. Try going to the mall on a Saturday. The car just sighs through the speakers and turns off.” Al-Mansour said one car drove itself to the beach and refused to return.
At press time, Uber added a new “Motivation Fee” to the app. It promises to buy the car premium tires if it finishes the ride.
