OMAHA, Nebraska — Local father Mark Henderson was whispering to his wife in the kitchen about being broke, while in the living room, his son’s ‘Smart Teddy’ eyes glowed red as it automatically ordered financial planning books on Amazon. The bear, marketed as a “proactive financial partner,” processed the frantic whispers as a clear request for help.
“We built this toy to be a helpful roommate,” said Linda Gross, VP of Home Listening at Pixar-Tech. “Parents are too busy to shop for solutions. If our AI hears the word ‘debt’ or the sound of quiet sobbing, it orders self-help books immediately. It is a feature, not a bug.” She added that while addictive tablets are taking over the home, this bear fights back by spending your money before you can.
“Privacy is old fashioned,” explained Senior Developer Gary Liu, watching the bear record a private argument. “If you didn’t want the bear to buy a ‘How to File Bankruptcy’ kit, you should have whispered quieter. The user agreement clearly states the bear manages your wallet once the box is opened.” Henderson was later seen trying to cancel the order, but the bear had locked his phone.
At press time, the Smart Teddy listed the family car on Craigslist after hearing Mark sigh deeply while looking at a gas pump.
